“Big Cattleyas – Prospects for their Return”

Robert "Bob" Scully

Big Cattleyas – Prospects for their Return”  That’s the topic that our January speaker will speak on. Robert “Bob”  Scully,  a second-generation Orchid Specialist,  will speak at the regular meeting of VAOS on Wednesday,  January 4th 2012.

Bob grew up around orchids when his family ran Jones &  Scully,  a very important firm in the development of the orchid hobby and trade in Miami,  Florida. Bob later became president but when Hurricane Andrew blew through that area in 1992,  the business was litteraly blown away.

Today,  Bob spends his time with Tiger Orchid Products focusing on Growing and Production consultancy. He also is active with numerous orchid or horticulturally affiliated organizations. Bob and his wife Susan live in Sarasota,  FL.

Since Bob is not a commercial grower,  Fender’s Flora will have plants for sale at this meeting.

November Speaker Brian Monk

Brian started growing and hybridizing orchids in his backyard, but this has expanded to 4000Brian Monk Photo square feet of greenhouse space.   He will grow anything green, but focuses on his hybridizing projects, which include the development of multi-floral white and pink Paphiopedilums, warmth-tolerant red Oncidiinae, and a standard pink Cattleya with an all-white lip.

Accompanied by his wife, Mary-Margaret, and inspired by his orchids, Brian continues to pursue and perfect his orchid culture and photographic skills.  Brian’s photography has won awards online, in the 2007 Miami International Orchid Show, and at the 2008 World Orchid Conference, and will be exhibited in Florida and California in 2009.  Brian is currently a student judge with the American Orchid Society.

Brian and his wife formed Blu Llama Orchids, Inc. 3052 S. Oakland Forest Drive #2104 Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33309

Come to the November meeting and hear a great presentation by Brian whose topic is “In The Pink”  and see what beautiful plants he will bring for sale.

Go to Blu Llama website.

Oct. 5th speaker is Linda Wilhelm

Linda Wilhelm comes from Woodland Orchids in Charlotte,  North Carolina where she and husband Rolf specialize in breeding warm tolerant Oncidiinae (several of their new hybrids have received awards from the AOS),  compact cattleyas and also line breed a number of different species. She will be speaking on ‘Oncidium Types and Their Culture’ and will have plants to sell before and after her lecture. It would be good to check out their website www.woodlandorchids.com and look over what plants they have. They will accept preorders and she will deliver them to the meeting.
