Show Table November 2008

Monthly meetings include a show table of members' plants. Six ribbons are awarded each month: four awards are selected by an alternating team of VAOS member judges. These awards are: one for Best Species, and a First, Second and Third place award to any plant, a Speaker's Choice award and the VAOS members vote on the plant for Members' Choice. The following section describes each of these awards for November. Plants are named as presented with minor editing corrections. To view a larger image, click on the photograph.




First Place and Speaker's Choice: Blc. Pamela Finney 'Alll Victory' HCC/JOGA

Grower: Barbara and Bob Wagner

Three intense pink flowers with a striking dark lip caught the judges attention. It is a hybrid of Blc. Pamela Finney and Lc. Irene Finney which was registered in 1996.





Second Place: Dendrobium

Grower: Jane Camarota

A nice small growing form of the Dendrobium bigibbium type. The plant was entered as Den. Caronii Darcie, a name which appears to be a trade name, not a registered hybrid.



Third Place and Members Choice: Bc. Maikai 'Mayumi'

Grower: John Simms

Bsn. Maikai, a hybrid of Brassavola nodosa x Guarianthe bowringiana, is known for its floriferousness. The clone shown has earned six different growers cultural awards from the American Orchid society with most awarded clones having more than 50 inflorescenses.

Species of the Month: Pleurothallis racemiflora

Grower: Monroe Kokin

The is one of the Pleurothallid species that is able to grow well in South Florida. The name is know Stelis quadrifida. It is widely distributed, from northern South American to Mexico and the Caribbean Islands.

Judges were Dorothy Funderburg, Betty Bromley, Mary Schmitt, Mary Ann Digrazia.
